Diamond buying guide 5 Diamond Buying Checks: the 4Cs + Grading Report Use the recognised 4Cs together with the individual stone's grading report, media and measurements. Diamond guide

The recognised GIA framework is the 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat. Imperial Time uses the grading report as a useful fifth buying check; it is not an official fifth GIA “C”. Always use the individual diamond record for the actual stone's certificate, report number and specifications where supplied.

Cut

Cut quality describes how successfully a diamond's proportions and finish interact with light. For round brilliant diamonds in particular, cut can have a major effect on brightness, fire and sparkle.

Colour

For white diamonds, grades commonly run from D (colourless) down the alphabet as visible warmth increases. Ring metal and diamond shape can influence how colour appears to the eye.

Clarity

Clarity grades describe inclusions and surface blemishes assessed under magnification. Two diamonds with the same clarity grade can still look different, so review the individual stone media and details.

Where should I spend my diamond budget?

For many engagement-ring buyers, the strongest result comes from balancing visible beauty rather than maximising every grade. Start with the shape and approximate carat you like, then compare cut or light performance, colour, clarity, measurements and price together.

A higher paper grade is not automatically the best-looking diamond for every budget. Use the available images, videos, measurements and grading information where supplied, and ask Imperial Time for a second opinion when two stones are close.

Natural vs lab-grown diamonds

Natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are both diamonds; the principal difference is origin. Natural diamonds form in the earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled conditions. Compare the individual stone's grading information, appearance, price and what matters most to you rather than choosing on terminology alone.

Shape, fluorescence, polish and symmetry

Shape changes the personality and apparent spread of a centre stone: round, oval, emerald, pear, cushion, radiant and other shapes can look very different at the same carat weight. Advanced filters such as fluorescence, polish, symmetry, table and depth can refine a shortlist, but should be considered alongside the complete stone rather than in isolation.

Which metal works best with my diamond?

White metals such as white gold or platinum create a cool, bright frame around the centre stone. Yellow and rose gold add warmer contrast and can make the ring feel more traditional or distinctive. Your preference, skin tone, maintenance expectations and the selected diamond all matter more than a single “best” metal.

How are fine engagement rings made?

The exact manufacturing route varies by ring and manufacturer. Fine-jewellery settings may involve casting or forming metal components, assembly, stone setting, polishing and hand finishing. The selected setting specification remains the source of truth for the actual ring you select; Imperial Time does not infer a manufacturing method that is not supplied.

Solitaire, halo, hidden halo, side-stone or bezel?

A solitaire keeps attention on the centre diamond. A halo surrounds the centre with smaller stones for greater visual presence; a hidden halo adds detail beneath the centre stone; side-stone designs add sparkle along the shoulders; and bezel-style settings frame more of the diamond's edge. Only compatible settings are shown for your selected stone.

What about maintenance?

All fine jewellery benefits from sensible care and periodic inspection. White-gold rhodium finishes can wear and may need refinishing over time; platinum can develop a natural patina; polished gold will also pick up surface marks through normal wear. If long-term maintenance is important to you, ask our Kensington team before ordering.
