Understand the number

Spot price, intrinsic value and an actual dealer offer are different

01

Spot price

The spot price is a market reference for fine precious metal. It changes through the trading day and is normally quoted for pure metal rather than finished jewellery.

02

Intrinsic / melt value

The calculator adjusts the fine-metal reference for the item’s stated purity and weight. This estimates the value of the precious-metal content itself.

03

Dealer valuation or offer

An actual offer can differ after testing, inspection, refining considerations and market movements. Resale, brand or collectable value may also make a piece worth more than melt value.

Purity guide

Gold carat and hallmark guide

UK gold hallmarks commonly identify fineness in parts per thousand. For example, 375 indicates 37.5% fine gold, corresponding to 9 carat gold.

Gold

375 = 9ct / 37.5%

585 = 14ct / 58.5%

750 = 18ct / 75.0%

916 = 22ct / 91.6%

999 = 24ct / 99.9%

A hallmark is useful evidence of stated fineness, but Imperial Time may still test or inspect an item before making an offer.

Transparent calculation

How the calculator works

Indicative intrinsic value = weight in grams × precious-metal purity × current fine-metal value per gram

Example formula for 10g of 9ct gold: 10g × 0.375 × current fine-gold £/g.

The current fine-metal value per gram is derived from the latest available spot-market reference converted to GBP. The same rate object powers the calculator, table and examples.

Do not scrap value you cannot replace

Could Your Jewellery Be Worth More Than Scrap?

Raw metal value is only one component of value. Signed or branded jewellery, luxury watches, diamond or gemstone-set pieces, antique and period jewellery, unusual craftsmanship, coins and collectable objects can command a premium above their intrinsic metal content.

Before selling solely for metal value, consider whether the maker, brand, stones, rarity, design, condition, provenance or resale demand could make the piece worth more. Imperial Time can assess the complete item rather than assuming it should be melted.

Questions answered

Frequently asked questions

How much is 9ct gold worth per gram?

The indicative intrinsic value of 9ct gold is 37.5% of the current fine-gold value per gram. The live table applies that purity factor automatically. An actual purchase offer can differ after inspection and testing.

How is scrap gold calculated?

Multiply the item’s weight in grams by its gold purity and by the current fine-gold value per gram. For example, 9ct gold uses a purity factor of 0.375.

What does 375 mean on gold?

A 375 fineness mark indicates 375 parts of fine gold per 1,000 parts of alloy, equivalent to 37.5% gold or 9 carat gold.

Is 18ct gold worth more than 9ct gold?

At the same weight, 18ct gold contains twice the fine-gold proportion of 9ct gold: 75% versus 37.5%. Finished jewellery value can also depend on brand, stones, condition and collectability.

Does this calculator show the price Imperial Time will pay?

No. It shows an indicative intrinsic metal value from current reference pricing. Any Imperial Time offer is confirmed after specialist assessment, testing and inspection.

Can jewellery be worth more than its scrap gold value?

Yes. Brand, maker, gemstones, age, design, condition, rarity, provenance and resale demand can make a complete piece more valuable than its raw gold content.
