What is the Swatch × Audemars Piguet Royal Pop?

The Royal Pop is a collection of mechanical pocket watches that brings together design details from Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and the removable watch concept of Swatch POP.

The distinctive Royal Oak influence is easy to spot in the octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws and patterned dial. Swatch adds its colourful approach and Bioceramic material, a blend of ceramic and material derived from castor oil with a smooth, matte finish.

Inside each watch is a manually wound version of Swatch’s SISTEM51 movement. It does not need a battery, but you do need to wind it using the crown. Wearing it on your wrist will not wind it automatically.

Audemars Piguet states that the movement offers more than 90 hours of power reserve when fully wound. Turn the watch over and you can see the incredible mechanism through the transparent back, along with its colourful decoration.

Why a pocket watch?

The pocket watch format has a connection to Audemars Piguet’s past.

The brand had already created a pocket watch interpretation of the Royal Oak decades before this collaboration. According to AP Chronicles, Audemars Piguet’s digital archive, reference 5691, created in 1979, was the first example.

The Royal Pop revisits the idea with different materials, brighter colours and a modular construction. The watch module can be removed from its outer frame, drawing on the concept behind Swatch POP.

That gives the collection some of its appeal. You can enjoy the original pocket watch format, wear it on a lanyard or explore wrist straps that let you wear it differently.

Làn Ba and Otg Roz have a separate seconds display and a crown positioned at the side known as the 3 o’clock dial. The other six show hours and minutes, with the crown at the top known as a 12 o’clock dial.

The position of the crown affects which case is suitable. For example, Green Eight accessories accommodate a crown at 12 o’clock, while the Otg Roz rubber strap and case set is designed for its crown at 3 o’clock.
